The park lies on the northern bank of Uaso Nyiro River, the river serves as the only source of water without which the game in the reserve could not survive in the arid country.
Solio Ranch or Solio Game Reserve is a privately owned wildlife conservancy located in Kenya’s Rift Valley Province. The ranch is a fenced, privately-owned protected area geared toward rhino conservation.
The 17,500-acre reserve, 22 km north of Nyeri Town, plays a major part in the protection and breeding black rhinos in Kenya. The rhino is a member of the ‘Big-Five’, which are a key tourist attraction.
Solio Ranch is recognized as one of the most successful private rhino breeding reserves in Kenya. The animals live in harmony with other wildlife, including the buffalo, zebra, giraffe and plains game such as eland, oryx, impala, waterbuck, Thompson’s gazelle and warthog.
The Matthews (or Mathews) Range, also known as the Lenkiyio Hills, is a range of mountains about 150 km long, oriented north-south, in the Laikipia district of the Rift Valley Province in northern Kenya. The town of Wamba is located at the southeastern edge of the range.
The highest point is Warges, at 2688 m above sea level, at the southern end of the range, separated by a valley from the rest of the range. The 2375 metres high Ol Doinyo Lenkiyo mountain is the highest peak of the middle of the range. There is also a breast shaped hill locally known as Sweet Sixteen in the range.
The area is isolated, and holds forests of juniper and cycads. It is home to elephants and other large mammals, and was one of the last places in northern Kenya to have wild Black Rhinos. The last Black Rhino in the Mathew’s was poached out in the 1990s.
The Mathew’s are also home to the Samburu people. The mountain range is a sky island: surrounded by plains, with Ndoto Mountains to the north and the Karisia hills to the west. A number of the species in the Mathew’s have evolved independently and the diversity of the forest is of great conservation value. Part has been designated as a wildlife sanctuary.

The mara river is a huddle to the wildebeest migration as the wildebeests have to cross the river from serengeti most of them perishing in the jaws of crocodiles and big cats. The western part of masai mara lies the siria escarpment, loita plains and the rest is the masai pastoral land.
